Born around 1596 to the Powhatan people in what is now Virginia, the girl who would later be known as Pocahontas carried more than one name within her family and community. Her public birth name was Amonute, while Matoax (also seen as Matoaka or Matoa) served as her private family name. The origins of these names remain shrouded in mystery, as historical records offer limited insight into their exact meanings.

To outsiders, she was primarily known by the nickname Pocahontas, which is often interpreted as meaning “mischievous one” or “little wanton.” This epithet likely reflected her playful nature and spirited demeanor. A cultural belief among her people held that learning a person’s true name could give another the power to cast a spell, so keeping both names secret was a protective practice. Consequently, early English observers only knew her as Pocahontas, a name she embodied through familiar interactions at the English fort and her lively companionship with local boys.
