War narratives often begin with a glance at how quickly battles can surge from spark to blaze. Across centuries, many conflicts stretched far beyond their initial expectations, yet a handful burned out in days or even minutes. While classic sagas like the Reconquista stretched nearly eight centuries, and the Hundred Years’ War lingered for 116 years, the modern era has seen far shorter clashes—though exceptions abound, such as World War I and World War II, which dwarfed those shorter episodes. In contrast, the shortest wars in history remind us that brevity can be brutal, and influence can be as lasting as bloodshed.

Slovenian War of Independence (10 Days)
Slovenia declared independence on June 25, 1991, becoming the first among the republics to part ways with Yugoslavia. Just two days later, Yugoslav forces intervened with an armored unit. The conflict that followed was a low-intensity struggle, marked by limited casualties, and concluded after a mere 10 days with the withdrawal of Yugoslav troops and a victory for Slovenia. The swift end was partly due to Croatia pursuing independence simultaneously, which redirected YAP resources away from Slovenia. The broader Croatian conflict unfolded more brutally, lasting four years and seven months. Photo credit: Hulton Archive/ Archive Photos via Getty Images

Six-Day War (6 Days)
The June War of 1967, also called the Six-Day War, erupted amid escalating tension from the earlier Armistice period and strategic moves by Egypt that closed the Straits of Tiran. Israel responded with preemptive airstrikes against Egypt, drawing in Syria and Jordan. Although the fighting persisted for only six days, casualties exceeded 20,000 among Arab forces and approached 1,000 for Israeli forces, and the conflict dramatically altered regional dynamics in terms of territory and power. Russo-Georgian War (5 Days)
In August 2008, hostilities flared between Russia and Georgia, culminating in a rapid invasion framed as a peace-keeping operation to support breakaway regions. The conflict involved land, air, and sea actions across Georgian territory, resulting in hundreds of deaths and a ceasefire brokered by France’s Sarkozy on August 12. Widely regarded as Europe’s first major conflict of the 21st century, it signaled a pattern of renewed Russian assertiveness. Photo credit: INTERFOTO/ Alamy Stock Photo

Hundred Hours’ War (100 Hours)
The Football War of 1969, a brief clash between El Salvador and Honduras, sprang from a surge of tensions linked to World Cup qualifiers and preexisting disputes over land reform and labor movements. After a few days of heavy hostilities and about three thousand lives lost, international diplomacy compelled a withdrawal. Anglo-Zanzibar War (38 Minutes)
The century’s shortest recorded war occurred in 1896 after a succession dispute in Zanzibar. When a pro-British sultan died and a rival took control, Britain responded with a flotilla assault that overwhelmed the palace’s defenses. The bombardment, lasting roughly 38 to 40 minutes, ended with the challenger’s surrender and minimal British casualties, earning its place in history as the briefest war ever documented.
